DR. FELTON WILLIAMS ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN

FOR LB SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD

Dr. Felton Williams, Dean of Long Beach City College’s School of Business and Social Science, announced his candidacy today for the Long Beach Unified School District Board of Education, District 2.

Williams spoke at a press conference in front of the LBUSD’s administration building. Current LBUSD District 2 Board Member Bobbi Smith on Tuesday announced that she would not be seeking re-election. Smith has endorsed Williams in his campaign.

Williams has the endorsement of a majority of the current school board. In addition to Smith, he has the backing of board members Mary Stanton, Jon Meyer and James Choura. He is also endorsed by former Congressman Steve Horn and his wife, Nini, Long Beach Vice Mayor Frank Colonna, and Long Beach City College board members Dr. Tom Clark and Trudy Polsky.

Williams said he wanted to continue to move the school district towards excellence, as evidenced by the recent receipt of the Eli Broad award. He plans to create greater opportunities for parental involvement in their children’s school curriculum. He will also seek to strengthen partnerships with the local business community.

Williams, who has a Ph.D. in Education Administration from Claremont Graduate University, has been dean of the LBCC School of Business and Social Science since 1997. He is responsible for supervision of the academic and occupational program at the school, as well as budget development and administration of state and grant funds.

He has a 30-year career in education, beginning at Cal State University Long Beach, with stops at Cal State University Dominguez Hills and Sacramento City College, before his current position.

Williams is also involved in the Long Beach community. He is a commissioner on the Community Development Advisory Committee, a member of the city’s Ethics Committee, and a board member of Leadership Long Beach. He is also a board member of the College of Business at CSULB.
